Reaching our potential

In any of my roles, personal or business, nothing gives me more pleasure that seeing people working towards achievement of their full potential. And conversely, nothing upsets me more than seeing people not reach their potential. Hence my involvement in the “personal development” industry.

Wikipedia describes personal development as “activites that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and potential, build human capital and facilitates employability, enhance quality of life and contribute to the realisation of dreams and aspirations…as personal development takes place in the context of institutions, it refers to the methods, programmes, tools, techniques, and assessment systems that support human development at the individual level in organisations.”

Business owners and managers have a responsibility to ensure everyone in the business has or develops the skills and attributes needed to do their job well, now and into the future. There is a responsibility to the customer to ensure everything is being done to deliver the product or service on time and as specified.

Q: How can organisations reach their full human potential?

A: By planning for it.

Follow these steps to develop the training plan for the year ahead.

Take the time to think about the challenges you have ahead. How much better would your organisation be if people had better skills to deal with these challenges, or if they developed the attitude needed to deal with whatever came along? How can you keep ahead of the competition? What skills will be needed?

Take the time to plan and implement your training programme as an integral business process and your business will reap the rewards.
